Is Pegan the new Paleo?

With a plethora of diet varieties to choose from, the question now is: should you eat like caveman or go Pegan? What is Pegan? A new eating trend that combines certain aspects of seemingly opposing diets: Paleo and Vegan. Yet not quite the ‘diet’ you’d find published in medical journals, either. Rather, Doctor Mark Hyman, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Centre for Functional Medicine, coined the idea who claims, “this way of eating makes the most sense for our health and the health of our planet.” When comparing the two, devotees of the Paleo (or “caveman”) diet consume foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors supposedly ate: meat (preferably grass-fed), fish, eggs, nuts, fruit and non-starchy vegetables (preferably organic). Paleo, a.k.a. the " caveman diet ," was created by  Loren Cordain  in 2002 and harkens back to the days when people ate a diet filled with grass-fed game, wild-caught fish, nuts, seeds, vegetables, berries and occasionally other fruits. The " Primal Blueprint ," created by athlete Mark Sisson in 2009, is similar in many ways. For example, when you follow the primal diet, you can eat all the healthy fats, meats, fruits, vegetables and dark chocolate you want. In the study, the researchers found that obese mice that were given high doses of the extract for one week ate 80 percent less food compared with mice that did not receive the compound. After three weeks, the mice treated with the compound lost 45 percent of their body weight, while mice in the comparison group did not lose any weight. However, it is not clear whether the extract would work in humans the same way as it does in rodents. "Mice and humans are not the same," said Dr. Eric Newman, a radiology resident at Jacobi Medical Center in New York, who was not involved in the study. Eating a Mediterranean diet can slash womb cancer risk

Women who eat a Mediterranean diet can slash their risk of womb cancer by more than half, a study shows. More than 8,500 women are diagnosed with  womb cancer  every year in the UK. Rates have increased by around half since the early 1990s. Italian researchers analysed the diets of 5,000 women to see how closely they stuck to the diet and whether they went on to develop womb cancer. The diet includes eating lots of vegetables, fruits and nuts, pulses, cereals and potatoes, fish, monounsaturated fats but little meat, milk and other dairy products and moderate alcohol intake. Researchers found that women who stuck to the Mediterranean diet the closest by eating between seven and nine of the beneficial food groups lowered their risk of womb cancer by more than half - 57%.
