Old Age Knocks at My Door

Nobody likes old age. We would like to stay young as long as possible. As an alternative, we try to look young, even if we aren't young. The tangible symptoms of old age are: white hair, and wrinkles - which need cosmetic treatment. In old age, the common ailments are: arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, hypertension, constipation, dementia, gaining weight, and diabetes. Even losing weight continuously is an old age ailment, linked with overactive thyroid glands. The friends and relations who see you after a couple of months, express concerns and may fail to recognise you. How do you face the onslaught of your well wishers?
How it begins
My friends commented,"You are looking slim and trim, these days.".
My spouse feels,"He keeps walking - whole day without any rhyme or reason."
My friends add,"But, why he is becoming thinner day by day?"
I intervened,"When we are not so young - in sixties - we can't eat like youngsters. No fried stuff! I am sure, replacement of old body cells would have slowed down too. But I feel healthy."
When such remarks continued, I consulted the doctor.
Weight loss from 70 Kg to 60 Kg, in a year or two!
And, the cause: an overactive thyroid gland!
Doctor suspected the lab report.
I thought,"How did he know - without meeting my spouse - that I was a lazy guy?"
How can a lazy person have an overactive thyroid!
But it was there, and I had the problem: an overactive thyroid gland at 70.
He wished,"If only you had less active thyroid glands, it would have been much easier to treat."
I expressed my regrets.
It was my mistake, but I had no control over it.
I was ready for a life long medication - which would be fixed after couple of hits and trials as per doctor.
I thanked God, for nearly trouble-free 70 years of life.
I had a normal life, but for two scooter accidents, with minor fractures in younger days.
I marvelled at God's perfection in designing human bodies.
Quite a few of His products do give trouble-free service till 70s and even 80s and 90s.
All it needs is: a healthy diet with no smoking and no excessive drinking; defensive driving habits, and regular exercise for body in gym and mind with Sudoku.
I see my future, through my father!
My father is nearing 94 and is my role model
He walked daily 3 miles for 7 decades.
He had arthritis there after, with both knees operated.
He kept walking/moving in spite of all hassles, with walker, or wheel chair.
He insisted on taking bath on his own, but he needed help to go to bathroom with walker.
As we grow older, old age effects keep on adding!
He had lesser control on bowels.
Doctors installed a catheter, as his urinary muscles stopped responding.
Now urinary problems are not there, with catheter.
He still insisted on cleaning himself, after number 2.
This was till couple of months ago.
Now he is almost bed-ridden, and takes bed-pan.
When I ask him, how is life?
He replies,"The vehicle - of life - is moving regardless."
And he smiles.
I get my free lessons from my father, on growing old cheerfully.
