Reasons Why You Should Go For Couples Counseling

By Daphne Bowen

There is no shame in seeking help when your marriage has problems. Given the rising number of marriages that end, it is important that you go for couples counseling if the need arises. Here are some indications that you need the help of a therapist to get your marriage going in the right direction again.

If you can't communicate effectively with your partner, get help. This includes one or both partners being unwilling to communicate or being quite disrespectful when communicating. This can be identified with the tone of voice and body actions. If you regularly feel put down by your partner during conversations, then these are warning signs. Aggressive communication can lead to physical and emotional abuse.

Seek help when either you or your partner has had an emotional or physical affair or you are thinking about having one. It is usually hard for a marriage to overcome the hurt that comes from one partner being unfaithful and it may take the help of a professional to help a couple navigate that time in their life. Going for therapy will help you decide whether you want to continue staying together or each one of you wants to move on.

Sometimes, you may be aware that your relationship has a problem but you may be unable to pin point what the specific problem is. If you feel that there is something amiss from your relationship get help. Not only will the therapist help you to identify the problem, they will also help you to deal with it in the proper way.

When you are thinking about separation or divorce, it may be worthwhile to see a counselor first. A counselor can help you put things in perspective and figure out whether the differences between you can be resolved or not. In most instances, if you are still committed to the relationship, you may be able to deal with the challenges that you are facing.

If extended family issues have spilled over to your marriage, it may be time to get an independent party to help you solve the problem. This can be a sensitive issue if one side of the family doesn't like or get along with one of the partners. This will help you to create boundaries in your relationship.

Lack of respect in a marriage is a danger sign. This is where one person feels superior to the other one and no longer regards their contribution in the marriage. Through professional help, you can learn to regard each other with high esteem again and have a healthy relationship.

If you are growing distant in your relationship, a counselor can help you figure out why and help you grow closer. Being distant means that you are no longer in touch with each other and you may be just living together in the same house. Make a deliberate effort to get close.
