Soaring summer temps can make you do things you normally wouldn't—like wear a tube top or reach for a sugar-packed soda or popsicle. Unfortunately, there's some not-cool news about those frozen treats: The fructose added to stuff like sweet snacks, soda, and lots of other packaged foods can make you eat more, found new research. You might think you're just sneaking a soda here or a sweet there, but fructose can have lasting effects beyond just the one isolated snack.
Researchers gave people either fructose or glucose, then asked questions about the participants' feelings and tracked their brain activity. Those who'd consumed fructose reported that they felt less satisfied, and the reward system in their brains (the regions that control emotion and impulses) were less stimulated than those in the glucose group. The group that consumed fructose also released a lower level of a hormone that regulates satiety. All combined, these effects can cause you to want more food and wind up overeating.
So if you want to keep that bikini body you've worked hard for, step away from the ice pops this summer. Or whip up some healthy versions of your own with fresh juices and whole fruits. We love the recipes from NYC's People's Pops. They're a more nutritious way to chill out.
