Diabetes Study Finds Eating Vegetables And Protein First Is Best

Even if you don’t have diabetes, if you live in America and are not careful about what you eat, the condition could eventually find its way to you. Because of this, many doctors and health officials advise that slight alterations to diet can be all that is required to lower risk for this terrible condition. If you do have diabetes, though, the same advice can ensure that you are metabolizing food as effectively as possible, lowering blood sugar in the process.
For example, a new study out of Cornell University says that eating vegetables and proteins before consuming carbohydrates could potentially lower glucose levels in diabetics, following the meal.
“We’re always looking for ways to help people with diabetes lower their blood sugar,” explained lead study author Dr. Louis Aronne. “We rely on medicine, but diet is an important part of this process, too.”
Indeed, he goes on to say, “Carbohydrates raise blood sugar, but if you tell someone not to eat them — or to drastically cut back — it’s hard for them to comply. We rely on medicine, but diet is an important part of this process, too. Unfortunately, we’ve found that it’s difficult to get people to change their eating habits.”
The study involved observing patients on glucose regulating medicines who ate various foods at different times to determine this order of consumption.
“Based on this finding, instead of saying ‘don’t eat that’ to their patients, clinicians might instead say, ‘eat this before that,’” Dr. Aronne adds. “While we need to do some follow-up work, based on this finding, patients with type 2 might be able to make a simple change to lower their blood sugar throughout the day, decrease how much insulin they need to take, and potentially have a long-lasting, positive impact on their health.”
